The Fiji New Zealand Business Council (FNZBC) has renewed its call for more time and a more transparent national consultation on the proposed Employment Relations Amendment Bill, saying the reforms carry significant consequences for both workers and businesses.
FNZBC President James Trusler said the Council was encouraged by the increasing agreement among employers, unions, and civil society groups that the public needs additional time to properly assess the scope of the proposed changes.
“We welcome the strong engagement from stakeholders,” Trusler said.
“These bills carry significant implications for employers, employees, and the broader business community, and it is imperative that all voices are heard.”
The Council reiterated its earlier support for the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation’s request to extend the public submission period.
Trusler said FNZBC members had expressed appreciation for the Council’s advocacy and highlighted the importance of meaningful consultation before any legislative changes are finalised.
“More time is needed for a thorough legal and operational review of the amendments, sector-specific analysis, and genuine collaboration between government, businesses, unions and the general public.”
FNZBC says it remains committed to supporting a legislative process that strengthens employment relations while protecting the interests of all stakeholders.
“We stand ready to contribute constructively to the development of fair and effective workplace legislation. We look forward to ongoing dialogue with policymakers as this important process continues,” Trusler added.
