Low-lying areas in the Eastern and Northern divisions were inundated with flood waters yesterday as heavy downpour affected major urban centres including Suva City.

The heavy rain prompted a flash flood warning by the Fiji Meteorological Services which reported a trough of low pressure affecting the Fiji group.

According to weather reports, the low pressure system came with associated cloud, showers and rain that would affect parts of the country until later today. The torrential rain affected Namosi, Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri and Ra. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Office also issued a warning to residents to remain vigilant with numerous flash floods recorded in various affected areas. The NDMO warned the public to refrain from crossing flooded roads, crossings or walkways.

“Those living in flood prone or low-lying communities should move to higher ground, prepare essential items in case evacuation becomes necessary and ensure that their emergency kit are ready and accessible. Drivers are advised to travel only when necessary and to exercise extreme caution especially at night when visibility is low.”

According to the Fiji Roads Authority, surface flooding was recorded along the Kings Rd, Daniva roundabout, Nasole junction, Foster Rd, Cunnigham Rd, Omkar to Nasinu junction, Vidal Ave and Fletcher Rd.
