Heavy rain warning issued for much of Fiji

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has placed large parts of the country under a heavy rain warning as unstable weather continues to intensify.

Released at 12:30pm today, the warning covers Yasawa, the eastern half of Viti Levu — including Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra — as well as the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding smaller islands.

Forecasters say a trough of low pressure remains anchored over Fiji, bringing widespread cloud, showers and persistent bands of heavy rain expected to continue through tomorrow.

Communities across the affected regions should expect occasional to continuous rain, heavy at times, along with isolated thunderstorms.

Authorities warn the ongoing rain may trigger flash flooding in low-lying areas, informal settlements, businesses, flood-prone communities and Irish crossings, leading to traffic disruptions and dangerous road conditions.

Urban centres are also likely to experience surface flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage. Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution as wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours significantly increase the risk of accidents.

The public is advised to remain vigilant, monitor official advisories and avoid flooded crossings as the unstable weather system continues to affect the country.
