Police Commissioner orders zero-tolerance on speeding

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has issued a strict directive to Traffic Highway officers, urging them to book any driver caught speeding — including police personnel, government vehicle drivers and himself.

His warning followed a briefing upon returning from the Western Division yesterday morning, where officers reported multiple bookings for speeds over 100 km/h, including one driver clocked at 126 km/h.

The Commissioner raised serious concern over the rising road death toll, despite repeated warnings on the dangers of speeding and reckless behaviour.

He stressed the need for consistent police visibility and strict recording of traffic infringements to reinforce that “no one is above the law” and that authorities are committed to keeping Fiji’s roads safe.

Commissioner Tudravu said road safety stakeholders have continuously appealed for a shift in driver mindset, yet statistics show many motorists remain complacent.

With the festive season approaching, the national road death toll has climbed to 67, compared to 53 at the same time last year. He urged all drivers to follow road rules at all times — whether or not police or LTA officers are present.
