MORE than 650 primary school students took to the field yesterday for the one-day Get Into Rugby (GIR) Plus Rugby Festival at the Buckhurst Park ground in Suva.

Fine weather prevailed throughout the day, a welcome sight considering the early conclusion of last year’s festival at the same venue due to a sudden onset of heavy rain.

This meant safer playing conditions for the young players as they engaged in tag rugby matches as their parents, guardians and teammates turned up and cheered on them.

GIR Plus support officer Noame Rabeni said the weather conditions were the answer to many prayers.

“We’ve always been reminding our players and our coaches to keep praying for the weather because sometimes, you really can’t tell whether it will rain, be sunny but we’re so thankful that it’s come out like this (fine weather),” Rabeni said.

She also thanked the parents and guardians of the players for their support.
