Heavy rain alert issued for multiple divisions

A heavy rain alert is now in force for Yasawa, the eastern half of Viti Levu — including Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra — as well as the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, a trough of low pressure currently lies over the eastern parts of the country and is expected to gradually strengthen from tomorrow.

The system is forecast to bring persistent cloud, showers and rain across affected areas until Monday.

From tomorrow, residents can expect occasional rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms developing. Forecast confidence remains moderate.

Authorities warn that the conditions may lead to flash flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas, including informal settlements, business districts and Irish crossings. Urban areas with poor drainage may also experience surface flooding, causing traffic delays.

Motorists are advised to take extra care as wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours increase the risk of road accidents.
