THE parents of 10-year-old Joji Caudre are still waiting for answers more than two months after their son was struck in a hit-and-run incident outside their Rovadravu home in Navua.
It happened on September 16, moments after he stepped off his school bus.
His mother, Atonina Lebakaumata said they witnessed the accident and recalled seeing a grey Toyota Aqua hit her son about 3.45pm.
“The car hit and carried my son on the hood, threw him to the ground and drove off,” she said.
She said witnesses told her the vehicle’s registration number and identified the driver as a woman known in the community.
Joji suffered deep cuts to his face and nose, trauma around his eyes and injuries that required his neck to be immobilised.
He was taken to Navua Hospital then transferred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
A police report was lodged at the Navua Police Station.
Mrs Lebakaumata said she told him about the eyewitness accounts but was informed the suspect was elsewhere.
The last update she received was on September 19 and she is appealing to the Commissioner of Police, saying they fear the case “has been swept under the rug”.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the report was filed on September 16 and that officers attended the scene.
“The statements of witnesses were recorded, however, no one saw the registration number of the vehicle,” she said.
“A similar vehicle was found and its owner interviewed, but “her alibi was checked with her manager who confirmed that she was at work and at no time left the place.”
Ms Naisoro said the commissioner had directed that updates be provided “as quickly as possible”.
