THE two-day Yaro Chiefs 7s kicked off at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday, featuring exciting actions from the opening round of pool matches under a fine weather enjoyed by all teams.

This marks the first Yaro Chief 7s.

Tournament director James Vunituraga thanked all teams and supporters who showed interest in the two days event and explained its main objective.

“This is the first Yaro Chief 7s and we thank the Momo Na Tui Lawa for his vision and his plan to have this tournament to prepare the Yaro teams for the Fiji Bitter 7s Series coming up.

” The main objective of this tournament is to get funds to support the Yaro Chiefs 7s team, this year they have been to more than six Fiji Bitter 7s tournaments across the country and for the next Fiji Bitter 7s series they want to travel to all the six tournaments,” Vunituraga said.

Former Fiji 7s winger Amenoni Nasilasila, who has returned to the field, displayed strong leadership in Yaro Chiefs’ opening two pool matches. They edged out Loloma 7s from Savusavu 7-5 in their first game and defeated Lau Brothers 19-7 in their second.

In the women’s division, Kadavu Stallions made a strong start, beating Yaro Queens 24-10, Sunset Rebels thrashed Yasawa Women 35-0, and Sinukakala Amazons overcame Ezers 17-7.

The Ezers women’s team features mostly Ba women’s rugby players, who recently won the Ranadi Cup. They plan to compete in all local 7s tournaments, including the six Fiji Bitter 7s Series events, as part of their off-season program.

The opening day saw all pool matches for the men’s, women’s, and U21 divisions completed. Day Two will feature elimination rounds in the morning, followed by the finals in the afternoon.
