The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has issued a stern reminder for all vessel owners and operators to strictly follow safety regulations after a tragic maritime incident near Vio Island, Lautoka, on Sunday night.
Authorities confirmed that five men left Saweni on a fishing trip to Cuvuli Reef aboard a 19-foot fiberglass boat powered by a 60-horsepower engine. The vessel reportedly encountered difficulties around 8pm.
Search and rescue operations involving the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Navy, and MSAF are ongoing.
MSAF said a full investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the accident, including an assessment of compliance and safety measures on board.
The authority again urged seafarers to ensure all lifejackets and lifesaving appliances are certified, vessels are seaworthy and registered, and weather conditions are checked before departure.
MSAF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict oversight of maritime safety standards and extended condolences to the families of those affected.
