The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has expressed its deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic maritime incident off the coast of Vio Island, Lautoka, on Sunday evening.
MSAF said preliminary reports indicate that five people had departed from Saweni, Lautoka, on a fishing trip to Cuvuli Reef, off Bekana Island, aboard a 19-foot fiberglass boat powered by a single 60-horsepower outboard engine.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 8 p.m. and was reported to authorities the following morning after one survivor swam to safety — without a lifejacket.
MSAF said search and rescue operations are continuing to locate the remaining individuals, with the Fiji Police Force leading the investigation, supported by the Fiji Navy and MSAF. The missing vessel has since been recovered and towed back to port.
“A full investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of the incident and review all contributing factors to help prevent similar tragedies in the future,” said MSAF.
The Authority also reminded all boat owners and operators to strictly comply with safety and registration requirements.
“We cannot overemphasize the importance of having valid compliance documents and lifesaving equipment onboard. Lifejackets save lives. Every vessel must be seaworthy, properly registered, and operated by a licensed captain.”
MSAF further urged seafarers to check weather conditions before departure and to inform family members or authorities of their travel plans and expected return times.
“While responsibility for safety compliance rests with vessel owners and operators, MSAF remains committed to proactive oversight and enforcement to uphold maritime safety standards.”
