The newly launched Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan is expected to set a clear path toward ensuring every Fijian community has access to safe and reliable drinking water, says Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

At the launch held yesterday at the Holiday Inn in Suva, Ro Filipe said the plan would also outline investment priorities, define institutional roles, and identify financing options.

“This marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to provide safe, reliable, and climate-resilient water and sanitation services to all Fijians, no matter where they live,” he said.

“Access to clean water and adequate sanitation is not merely a basic need, it is a human right, a driver of public health, and a cornerstone of sustainable rural development.

“The preparation of this master plan has been a truly collaborative effort.

“It draws on extensive consultations, comprehensive data collection, and the valuable contributions of our partners across government, civil society, and the international community.”

The master plan, he said would be implemented in two key phases with the first from 2025-2030 focussing on achieving universal physical coverage through sustainable and climate-resilient systems.

“Phase two will be from 2031-2050 which will build on this foundation to strengthen long-term service delivery through improved regulation, planning, and innovation.

“This master plan aligns closely with Fiji’s key national policies and strategies, including the National Development Plan 2025-2029, the Draft Water and Sewerage Services Bill, the Draft National Water Resources Management and Sanitation Policy, the Draft Fiji Integrated Water Resource Management Plan, and the Water Sector Strategy 2050.”
