It was a good performance and learning curve for the Junior Bula Boys according to Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf, as they concluded their campaign at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar yesterday.
The team faced tough competition, losing three of their pool matches, including a 0-7 defeat to Argentina in their final Group D match yesterday.
Despite the challenging losses, Yusuf maintains faith in the team’s potential.
“This marked the first time the team participated in the World stage, making it a historic moment for Fiji football,” said Yusuf
“We were placed against world football giants, Argentina, Belgium and Tunisia, these teams have professional academies, their U17 teams are playing full time professional football.
Yusuf is optimistic about the team’s prospects. He believes the players will return for the next tournament in Qatar, offering a year for preparation and improvement.
“So, concerning that our boys really did well, our players are home grown and amateur players, it’s a good learning experience for our team, because I think 60 per cent of these boys will return to Qatar next year, they have qualified again.”
He adds upon their return (today), the players are expected to recover and return to their districts.
“The experience gained from their World Cup journey will undoubtedly help them grow and improve for future competitions.” Meanwhile, in their match against Argentina, Fiji struggled to contain the formidable Argentine side, with players like Uriel Ojeda and Mateo Martinez showcasing their goal-scoring prowess.
The team’s journey may have ended in defeat, but the lessons learned and the experience gained will undoubtedly benefit Fiji’s footballing future.
