TWO months after their birth, the conjoined twins are still alive, well and healthy.

Minister for Health Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said the twins remained admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva and are in good health.

The twins were born on September 6 and have since been under the medical supervision of local doctors only.

Dr Lalabalavu said the medical team had not heard back from international partners they had contacted.

“This rare occurrence has brought both challenges and an opportunity for collaboration as we seek overseas partners for their treatment,” he said.

“We are currently awaiting responses from our partners in Saudi Arabia and the USA.

“Given the healthy condition of the twins, if we don’t hear from our partners by the end of this week, we’ll arrange for the twins to return home temporarily while we wait for updates.

“We are pleased to report that the twins are doing well in this early stage.”

Dr Lalabalavu said such cases were incredibly rare.

“It’s been about more than 20 years since our last one, making this our second instance. Let’s continue to support the family during this time and ensure that we’re prepared for the next steps in their care.”
