Fijian Cup kicks off

The 2025 Fiji Cup kicked off successfully with touch rugby at Lawaqa Park yesterday.

Tournament director Harley Wall was excited for the opening round this weekend.

“The teams that have come have prepared well for this tournament and we excited to have some big teams in the world come for the Fiji Cup this year, ” Wall said.

Wall was impressed with the growing number of participants each year.

“We see number of teams continue to grow, this year we have 34 teams with majority of teams of New Zealand and Australia and for the first time this year we have a team from USA and that’s really cool,” Wall added.

Assistant Tournament Director Nanise Tikoicina was excited with day one competition yesterday where they had a good start and also could see competition was very intense.

In yesterday’s results for the Open Men’s category

Section A: Wairere thumped Island Time 11-0; AZ1 beat Koroturaga 5-4; Wairere secured their second victory after defeating Koroturaga 9-3; Island Time and AZ1 drew 2-2. Wairere claimed their third win to keep their hopes alive for the elimination round today after walloping AZ1 12-1, while Island Time drew with Koroturaga 7-7 in the final pool match.

Section B: Elementz beat Waqavuka 7-1, Bolts defeated newcomers VT Bears 6-4; Elementz thumped Bolts 5-0; Waqavuka drew 3-3 with VT Bears; Elementz beat VT Bears 6-1,and Bolts edged Waqavuka 4-3.

Touch rugby finals will be held later today.
