SIXTY women from the tikina (district) Sawau in Beqa are taking part in a two-week intensive training program organised by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre to mark the launch of the 16 days of Activism against Violence against Women and Girls campaign.

The program focuses on gender, human rights, legal literacy, and technology-facilitated violence against women and girls.

Centre co-ordinator Shamima Ali said the training, being held on the island, was part of the organisation’s nationwide strategy to develop community advocates to help eliminate violence against women and girls.

She commended the Rewa provincial office for its progressive approach, recognising gender equality as an essential part of development.

Since 2023, the centre has conducted several awareness programs in Rewa for both men and women. In 2025, more than 100 men completed the male advocacy for women’s human rights program, which encourages men to reflect on and change their attitudes and behaviours toward women and girls.

The centre has also established village committees in Rewa to support survivors of domestic violence and promote awareness at the community level.

The 16-day activism campaign runs globally from November 25 to December 10, highlighting violence against women as a human rights violation.

Australia and New Zealand continue to support the centre’s work in advancing women’s rights and ending violence across Fiji and the Pacific.
