FIJI Amateur Boxing head coach Cam Todd is pleased with his team’s performance at the recent New Zealand Invitational competition, which took place over the weekend in New Zealand.
Thirteen boxers from Fiji participated in the competition, resulting in seven wins and six losses.
Todd expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “I was very happy with the competition,” said Todd.
“We had seven wins and six losses in total, facing a strong New Zealand lineup. My goal was to achieve at least a 50-50 record, and we have met that goal.”
He commended the team as a whole, noting the outstanding performances of each boxer in their unique ways.
Among the younger boxers, Steven Ledua stood out for Todd, showcasing significant improvement by defeating an older, formidable opponent.
Another promising boxer, Liu Lapolo, demonstrated hard work and maturity in securing his victory.
On the other hand, female boxer Jasmin Daunakamakama fought valiantly but was unable to secure a win against national champions.
Despite the six losses, Todd praised the team for giving their all and competing with heart.
Reflecting on the competition, Todd identified areas for improvement, such as the need for some boxers to enhance their technical skills, increase intensity in the ring, and focus on weight management.
These are aspects that will be addressed in preparation for their upcoming competitions.
Looking ahead, the team has a busy November schedule, including the Sukuna Bowl and the Golden Gloves.
Todd emphasised the importance of these events, particularly for elite boxers aiming for the Commonwealth Games.
Todd also expressed gratitude to the Fijian community in New Zealand for their support and donations of food for the boxers.
