IT was a packed venue at Grants Betting in Suva, where Half Yours emerged victorious in the 2025 Melbourne Cup, with jockey Jamie Melham making history as the second female jockey to win the prestigious race.

The atmosphere was great, with punters experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions as they watched the thrilling event unfold.

Among the crowd was 57-year-old Solomone Marawa from Coloisuva, who shared his excitement about being a part of the Melbourne Cup race for the past decade.

Despite not coming out on top this year, Marawa expressed his admiration for the winning horse, Half Yours, and acknowledged its deserving victory.

” I have been participating in the Melbourne Cup race, for ten-years now and I can say it has always been an exciting moment for me.

“I was not lucky enough to win this year, but I can say it was a great race, and Half Yours deserve the win this year.”

For Marawa, betting on the Melbourne Cup has become more than just a pastime – it’s a source of entertainment and camaraderie with friends.

As he gets older, this annual event provides him with an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of the race and, hopefully, make some money along the way.

As the 2025 Melbourne Cup comes to a close, Marawa and other punters are already looking ahead to next year’s race, eager to make the right choices when it comes to selecting the winning horse and jockey.

The Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday of November.
