Fijian international Ben Volavola is set to make his return to Super Rugby after signing a one-year contract with the Queensland Reds for the 2026 season.

The Queensland Rugby Union confirmed the signing, describing Volavola as an experienced and versatile addition capable of covering flyhalf, inside centre, and fullback.

Volavola, 34, has enjoyed a globe-trotting career that includes over 200 professional matches and 38 Test caps for Fiji, featuring in both the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.

“The biggest reason I found the Reds so appealing is believing that they have a squad that can challenge for some silverware,” Volavola said.

“With a two-year-old son, the attraction of getting back to Australia and being surrounded by family is appealing as well.”

After a stint with English Premiership club Leicester Tigers, where he reunited with former Waratahs coach Michael Cheika, Volavola said his time in Europe had reignited his passion for the game.

“Playing under ‘Cheik’ at Leicester reinvigorated my game. It was a blessing,” he said.

“I’ve played flyhalf, fullback, and centre in Europe. You get chucked into the centres and it helps you become a better 10 or playmaker because you better understand how your outside men like the ball delivered.”

Born in Sydney and raised in Fiji, Volavola began his professional career with the NSW Waratahs in 2013 before moving on to the Crusaders and Melbourne Rebels. He later enjoyed successful spells with clubs in New Zealand, France, and England.

Volavola remains available for Fiji but will also have his Australian eligibility reactivated in 2026, keeping open the possibility of representing either nation in the future.

“To play international rugby again and get myself to a Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027 is definitely an ambition,” Volavola said.

“That’s a long-term goal that I’m very inspired and driven to do.”

The Fijian playmaker also spoke about his admiration for the Reds’ brand of rugby.

“Even being in Europe, I tried to stay up to date with Super Rugby via YouTube highlights,” he said.

“Seeing how the Reds play the game is one of the things that excites me. There’s a run-the-ball mentality but a smart kicking game and impressive work by the forwards mixed into that attacking identity.”

Reds Head Coach Les Kiss welcomed Volavola’s signing, saying his experience and versatility would be a major boost for the squad.

“The ability to play multiple positions is a really strong attribute within our Reds squad,” Kiss said.

“Ben has experience at the top level in multiple positions, he’s a proven kicker and his previous seasons in Super Rugby will hold him in good stead. He will be a useful and experienced voice around our younger backs.”

Volavola will join the Reds’ pre-season training in early 2026 as the Brisbane-based club looks to strengthen its push for a title in the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
