FIJI Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has high praise for young player Motikiai Murray, describing him as a leader as the team gears up for their Autumn Nations Series match against England this Sunday.

Originally from Lovoni, Ovalau, Motikiai Murray has emerged as a standout flanker, progressing through the Fijian rugby pathways from Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) to the Fiji Under 20s, the Fijian Drua development program, and now as a crucial member of both the Drua main squad and the Flying Fijians team.

Coach Byrne commends Murray for his leadership qualities, noting that he captained the under-20s and showcasing his potential as a talented young player.

“He was captain in the under-20s. He’s a good young player,” said Byrne.

“There are parts of his game that he needs to improve but there’s parts of his game that he’s really good at.”

Byrne mentions Murray’s need to increase his involvement around the field to align with the team’s style of play.

Despite this, Byrne emphasises Murray’s potential for growth and describes him as a tough player with a promising future ahead.

“That’s the case of all good young players. We feel his toughness over the ball and his aggression around the contact area is a real plus for him.

“Other parts of the game where he’s going to improve and we’ve chatted to him about it, is getting around the field and doing a little bit more around the field to fit the sort of style we’re trying to play.”

Byrne emphasises Murray’s potential for growth and describes him as a tough player with a promising future ahead.

“He’s a good young player. He’s a good tough young player with a big upside.

“We’ve got to keep assisting with those young players and give them an opportunity to reach their potential.”

The team will play England at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham, London, in their first Test, followed by France on their home turf on November 15 in Bordeaux.
