THE chairperson of the Nasinu District Council for Older Persons, Randhir Prasad, is calling on the public to cherish and take better care of their elderly families.

This comes after the council organised a recreational program for more than 60 senior citizens of Nasinu and residents of the Valelevu Nursing Home, at the Fiji Museum last week.

Mr Prasad said one of the main issues observed during visits to the elderly was the isolation they experience after being neglected by their families.

“We will also do profiling. If you are being neglected by your loved ones or your own children, we want to know your stories,” he said.

“Please do take care of your elderly.”

As part of the program, the senior citizens toured the museum and took part in various activities, including medical screenings, sharing of success stories and life experiences, nature appreciation sessions to boost mood and physical health, and opportunities to build social connections.

“The recreational program is to reduce your stress and improve both your physical and mental health,” Mr Prasad told the participants.

He said this was the first visit to the Fiji Museum for many of the participants, and he encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity to meet one another and build meaningful connections.

The event was also held to honour and remember the sacrifices and service of the nation’s elderly.

Mr Prasad announced that next month, the council will launch the Nasinu Older Persons Association, which aims to further support and empower senior citizens in the district.
