The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain alert for several parts of the country, warning of possible flash flooding and travel disruptions over the next few days.

The alert, issued at 3pm today, covers the eastern half of Viti Levu (from Serua–Namosi through Navua–Suva–Nausori to Tailevu, Naitasiri and Ra), the Yasawa Group, the Northern Division, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

According to the Nadi Weather Office, a trough of low pressure lies over the eastern parts of Fiji and is expected to gradually strengthen later today, bringing cloud, showers, and periods of heavy rain across much of the country.

Rainfall readings over the past 24 hours show significant downpours, including 66mm at Tokotoko (Navua), 33mm at Dobuilevu, and 25.5mm at Korovou.

Authorities warn that the wet weather may cause flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, surface flooding of roads and urban streets, and reduced visibility during heavy downpours, posing a risk to motorists.
