SPIRITS are high in the Fiji Amateur Boxing team’s camp in New Zealand as they finalise preparations for tomorrow’s New Zealand Invitationals.
Coach Cam Todd says the young boxers are eager to compete against their New Zealand opponents.
“The team is really excited the competition is on Saturday they have been training really well, experiencing New Zealand and they are just keen to get to the competition and perform their best,” Todd said.
Development will be the focus for Todd’s young team, but the New Zealander is confident of pulling a few wins.
“We more focused on performance.
“I’m what you call a performance-based coach while winning is nice what I’m really focused on is my boxer’s performing at their absolute best. And that’s important for this young team.
“Having said that I really think they all have a really good chance, and we will get some wins on Saturday (tomorrow).”
Meanwhile, three local coaches including Rusi Qarasaumaki, Tui Lomaloma and Ana Ledua are also progressing well, capitalizing on this rare opportunity.
“Our local Fijian coaches are working very well, I’ve been doing a lot of work with them, assessing them giving them some performances they need to work on, giving them coaching scenarios and just generally upskilling them.
“So, at this stage I’m happy with what they are doing, and they are on the right track,” Todd explained.
Team Fiji’s youngest boxer is only 11-years-old
The New Zealand Invitationals gets underway tomorrow at the Wairarapa Boxing Academy and is planned to end on Sunday.
