A long-awaited dream is becoming a reality for the people of Mali Island as an underwater cable from the mainland in Labasa is being installed to supply electricity to the island’s three villages.

Mali district representative Pita Baleibau said the community had lived without electricity for many years.

“For many years, the people of our district lived without access to electricity, which greatly affected education, business, healthcare, and general living conditions,” he said.

The villagers, Mr Baleibau said, celebrated when the electric poles were erected.

“Our community celebrated with tears of happiness, it was a long-awaited dream finally coming true.

“After many years in darkness, seeing the promise of light filled everyone with gratitude and renewed belief in Government support.”

Mr Baleibau said with electricity, children would now be able to study at night, small businesses could operate more efficiently, and health centres could provide better services.
