The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has urged members of the public not to be alarmed by the sound of simulated gunfire and explosions over the next two weeks, as it conducts its annual multinational military exercise, Exercise Cartwheel 2025.
The large-scale training operation, which began yesterday and will run until 11 November 2025, in areas around Force Training Group, Wainibuku, Makoi, and Colo-i-Suva.
It will feature troops from Fiji, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Tonga, and Japan.
RFMF said the exercise is designed to test and improve coordination between Fiji and its international partners.
“Exercise Cartwheel has grown into a significant regional platform for building cooperation, readiness, and interoperability,” the RFMF said in a statement.
“It allows us to train as we would operate in real crisis situations.”
The military confirmed that the drills will include the use of blank ammunition and pyrotechnics to simulate battle conditions.
“The public should not be alarmed if they hear loud bangs or see troop movements in these areas.”
“All necessary safety precautions have been taken to ensure minimal disruption and to safeguard the public.”
Residents and motorists in the affected areas are advised to remain alert and follow any safety directions from military personnel.
“We greatly appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation. Your support allows us to maintain the high standards of readiness required to respond to any contingency.”
The RFMF added that Exercise Cartwheel 2025 underscores Fiji’s continued commitment to regional security and disaster response preparedness.
