THE Pacific Islands Council of Trade Unions (PICTU) has been revived with Fiji taking the lead role in strengthening the trade union movement across the region.

Speaking at the opening of the PICTU Strategic Planning Workshop in Nadi, Fiji Trades Union Congress general secretary Felix Anthony said regional partners have been actively working together to ensure trade unions were strengthened to protect workers rights.

“While there were initial successes, we were not able to sustain those successes and I think what we have before us is a challenge,” said Mr Anthony.

“We must ensure that this time around that when we get together, we develop a work plan and path forward that is going to work and it will be sustainable.

“And we will build stronger trade unions within the Pacific region, and we will be able to communicate better with one another as we move forward.

“That has been one of the other big challenges that we have and that is the communication between us.”

He said they looked forward to working alongside their regional trade union partners in developing a sustainable work plan.

“I look forward to your contributions over the next few days and that when we leave this meeting that we all commit ourselves to build stronger unions in the region and not only that but actually delivering to the workers that we represent in our respective countries.

“We must see some results.

“Let this not be just another meeting where we come, have a good time, feel good about it then we go back.”
