The Standard Concrete Tailevu Rugby Union has expressed its condolences to the family of the late former netball player and coach Unaisi Rokoura, who passed away recently.
Union president Joseph Rodan relayed the message on behalf of the organisation to her family, Netball Fiji and the Vanua Vakaturaga o Naitasiri.
“The late Unaisi Rokoura was a true ambassador of Fijian sport, a role model, leader and mentor whose legacy continues to inspire young athletes across Fiji,” Rodan said.
He highlighted her progression from grassroots level to being the head coach of the Fiji Pearls as an example of the importance of career pathways and the development of sports at the grassroots level.
Noting this, he mentioned how netball and rugby were linked through their broader vision for uplifting communities and nurturing formidable athletes.
“Netball, as our sister sport, shares a common vision with rugby, nurturing talent from the community level and building champions who represent our nation with pride and humility.
“The Tailevu Rugby Union stands in solidarity with Netball Fiji and joins the sporting fraternity in honouring the remarkable life and contribution of the late Unaisi Rokoura.
“May her legacy continue to inspire future generations of athletes to follow in her footsteps with the same passion, discipline, and commitment that she exemplified throughout her sporting career.”
The late Rokoura passed over the weekend after being swept away by strong water currents near Navuso in Nausori while looking for freshwater mussels.
She had done so with three other women, one of them being a 34-year-old who was also swept by strong currents and passed away as a result.
