LAUTOKA City Council special administrators board chairperson Taitusi Rasoki Kata says a proposed hotel development at an open space within the city is not set in stone.
“Everything is still at the consultation stages,” said Mr Kata.
“We have not started any construction work, or anything related to the development.
“The only thing we will do next is facilitate a consultation where we will hear from the public, our stakeholders and the developers of the proposed development.”
The council came under heavy fire last week after it issued a notice of a public consultation on the proposed project on one of the city’s popular open spaces near the Coronation Church and the city library. Public outrage and concerns ranged from the potential environment impact of removing some of the city’s iconic rain trees, decreasing the number of public resting areas within the city boundaries and traffic congestion issues.
During the recent Fijian Media Association Town Hall Forum in Ba, permanent secretary for Local Government Seema Sharma said they would discus the proposed project with the council.
She assured residents the concerns of the residents would be taken into consideration.
Consultation on the proposed development will be held at the council’s chamber at 10am today.
