Former Fiji 7s playmaker Amenoni Nasilasila has been released from prison, six years after being convicted and jailed for rape in October 2019.
Nasilasila was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with a non-parole period of six years by High Court judge Justice Daniel Goundar following his conviction for the rape of a United States-based Fijian flight attendant in Olosara, Sigatoka, on December 22, 2018.
At the time, Justice Goundar described Nasilasila’s downfall as a “fall from grace”, noting that his fame and sporting achievements did not exempt him from the law.
“A fall from grace is a punishment in itself — unfortunately, the realisation is late and so is the apology for clemency,” Justice Goundar had said during sentencing.
Nasilasila, once celebrated for his speed and playmaking skills on the international rugby sevens circuit, is now understood to have completed his minimum non-parole term and been released from the Corrections Service custody.
