Lawyer Wylie Clarke has described the charges laid against his client, former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, as defective and unsupported by any credible evidence.
Mr Kamikamica appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday charged with perjury and giving false information to a public servant.
According to the charge sheet, the allegations relate to statements Mr Kamikamica allegedly made during his time in government.
The charges were sanctioned by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Acting Commissioner Lavi Rokoika.
In court, Mr Clarke told the magistrate that the charges had no factual basis and were “unsupported by evidence.”
He said he had written to FICAC outlining his concerns and was awaiting an official response from the commission.
Mr Clarke also informed the court that Mr Kamikamica was currently overseas on official travel but was scheduled to return to Fiji later today.
The case has been adjourned to Friday for mention.
Mr Kamikamica resigned yesterday as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for External Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications.
