The Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics is partnering with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) to conduct a new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) prevalence survey.
This is the first such study since 2010-2011.
Assistant Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics Esrom Emmanuel said the findings would be crucial in improving the country’s data on gender-based violence and in shaping future policy.
“The bureau is working with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre to conduct a new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) prevalence survey,” he said.
“The last such study was completed in 2010–2011, with this latest edition expected to conclude by year end.”
He said reliable statistics played a vital role in protecting vulnerable groups and ensuring policies address real issues affecting women and girls.
“Data has become a critical tool in shaping our national development priorities.”
Mr Emmanuel said the Government’s commitment to evidence-based policy was clear in its partnerships with national institutions like FWCC.
He said the new study would help evaluate how far Fiji had progressed since the last survey and identify areas needing urgent attention.
He also reaffirmed the Government’s pledge that “no one is left behind” as Fiji builds stronger statistical foundations to inform national action on gender equality.
