THIRTEEN life-saving heart surgeries were performed at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Suva during the 23rd Surgical Mission, described by doctors and families as “a week of miracles”.
The week-long mission, led by Dr Kirsten Finucane, brought together a team of 33 medical professionals from New Zealand and Australia. The team worked tirelessly, performing surgeries on children with congenital and rheumatic heart conditions.
The mission was supported through a partnership between the Hearts for Kids Foundation New Zealand, the Pacific Medical Association Group, and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Hospital director Dr Krupali Tappoo said the success of the surgeries reflected the compassion and teamwork behind each mission.
“Each person, whether in the operating theatre or behind the scenes, plays a vital role in saving these little hearts. Healing isn’t just a medical process; it’s a collective act of love, dedication, and compassion,” she said.
The mission also marked a milestone for the hospital, with children including Karalaini Lia undergoing successful valve repairs for rheumatic heart disease.
Families shared emotional testimonies at the Gift of Life ceremony.
“We came with worry and leave with hope. My child can now play, run, and dream again,” said Ana Ioloma Katoa, mother of Polata’ane Jr Katoa.
“When we came, I was afraid. Now I leave with only gratitude. This hospital and the doctors have given my son his life back,” said Sammy’s mother.
“I will never forget this day. My daughter has been given another chance to live,” said Karalaini’s mother, overcome with emotion.
As families left the hospital, holding their children close, they carried what many described as the greatest gift of all – renewed faith and gratitude.
