As Fijians prepare to celebrate the Festival of Lights, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is reminding everyone to mark the occasion with joy, responsibility, and safety.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Mr Puamau Sowane said Diwali should be a time of happiness and togetherness, not tragedy. He urged families to remain vigilant when using diyas, candles, cooking appliances, and fireworks.
“Let us all work together to ensure that this Diwali is remembered for joy and unity, not preventable tragedies,” Mr Sowane said.
“Celebrate responsibly, stay alert, and call 910 immediately if an emergency arises. Happy Diwali to all Fijians!”
The Authority said its records show multiple fire incidents occur each year during Diwali, often caused by unattended cooking, open flames, and unsafe handling of fireworks.
These incidents, NFA warned, can result in serious property damage, injuries, and loss of life.
“Fire safety begins at home,” Mr Sowane said.
“Simple precautions such as placing diyas and candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces and keeping them away from flammable materials can prevent serious consequences.”
He also reminded the public to extinguish all flames before leaving home or going to sleep and to never leave cooking unattended.
On fireworks, NFA advised purchasing only from licensed vendors, reading safety instructions carefully, and using them in open areas away from homes, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
Mr Sowane said NFA continues nationwide awareness programs to promote fire safety throughout the year. “As we light our homes this Diwali, let us also keep safety at the heart of every celebration,” he said.
