IT was a valuable learning experience for Labasa team as they faced Tailevu Naitasiri in the semi-final of the Extra Futsal Inter-District Championship at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.
Despite a hard-fought match, Labasa fell short with a 3-4 loss to their opponents.
Labasa made an early impact with Ashnil Kumar Raju scoring a goal in the 2nd minute, setting a positive tone for the team.
However, Tailevu Naitasiri responded with goals from Neeraj Sharma and Shifraaz Khan, taking the lead 2-1 at halftime.
The second half saw Avishek Deo score for Tailevu Naitasiri, extending their lead to 3-1, but Labasa’s Simione Ragoneturaga scored quickly to close the gap to 3-2.
A goal from Tailevu Naitasiri’s Maciu Tuilau put them ahead further, despite Ashnil Kumar Raju scoring a second goal for Labasa.
Ultimately, Tailevu Naitasiri clinched the victory with a 4-3 win over Labasa.
Labasa coach Imtiaz Begg reflected on the match, acknowledging the team’s efforts and highlighting missed opportunities, including three penalty kicks.
“It was a hard luck for the boys, we have it all in this semi-final, but we fell short,” said Begg.
“We missed a lot of opportunities, we missed three penalty kicks but hats off to the boys for the hard work, and reaching the semis.”
Despite the loss, Begg praised the players for their hard work and determination in reaching the semi-finals.
He emphasised the significance of the experience gained for many players who were new to futsal, noting it as a valuable achievement for the team.
Meanwhile, Shifraaz Khan of Tailevu Naitasiri was named the Extra Player of the Match for his standout performance.
