A growing number of Fijians are leaving the country for employment opportunities abroad, according to the latest figures from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.
In September 2025, a total of 1,133 residents (7.1%) departed Fiji for overseas employment.
Overall, 15,961 residents left Fiji during the month, with the majority (14,417 or 90.3%) away for short-term absences of less than three months.
The data shows that 46.5% of all departures were for holidays, while 32.5% were to visit friends and relatives.
However, employment-related travel has remained one of the most significant categories, indicating Fiji’s growing participation in international labour markets, particularly in Australia and New Zealand.
407 Fijians departed the county for a period of 3 months – 12 months for employment purposes while 345 left for period of 1 year – 5 years.
