Homeowners have been strongly advised to install easy to open burglar grills following a fatal fire in Meigunyeh, Nadi, which killed three people trapped inside their home.
National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane said the fire was suspected to have been fuelled by the many solid, liquid and gas materials contained in a fuel room, adding that the residence had secure burglar grills.
He said fuel load in the home may have made the fire burn more intensely and the high thermal heat and thick smoke made it impossible to see.
“The National Fire Authority advises that while burglar grills are often installed to prevent theft, they can also block quick escape during a fire. In emergencies, such barriers can trap people inside and reduce their chances of survival,” Mr Sowane said.
He added that homeowners should design or install burglar grills with easy-to-open mechanisms from the inside to ensure safe and quick evacuation when a fire occurs.
Mr Sowane also highlighted concerns over the ongoing issue of cane field fires in the Western Division, warning that such activities can escalate into large-scale disasters, particularly under dry and windy conditions.
“Fires spread within seconds…being prepared and knowing how to respond can mean the difference between life and loss.”
