THE Fiji Police Women’s Inter-Formation Volleyball and Netball tournament got underway at the National Netball Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.
Ten teams from the various divisions battled it out in each sport on day one, as competition proved to be a stiff contest for teams wishing to dethrone defending champions, the Southern Division.
Female police officers convened at the netball centre to contest the title and to also showcase compelling performances for the coaches of the Police’s Sukuna Bowl volleyball and netball teams to take note of.
The deputy national co-ordinator of the Fiji Police Women’s Network, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Salaseini Vakatuturagani, highlighted the growth in the turnout of teams this year.
“The tournament today is bigger than those in the previous years, especially last year’s,” ASP Vakatuturagani shared.
“This is quite bigger, there are so many young and talented players who are here today.”
She said the high percentage of women in the force, at 26 per cent, helped make up the large representation of players in this year’s competition.
This tournament, like other inter-formation tournaments held by the force in other sports recently, is part of the force’s process of selecting a team to represent it at the annual Sukuna Bowl challenge next month.
She has also extended a call for support to their male counterparts to come out in numbers and cheer on the officers.
The inter-formation tournament ends today and the final team for the Sukuna Bowl in both sports will also be announced during the awards ceremony.
