THE Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC) in Fiji has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with New Zealand-based eco-friendly product manufacturer It Works Naturally (IWN) NZ Ltd, securing a new partnership to boost poverty alleviation efforts in Fiji.
Under the agreement, IWN committed to donating profits made in Fiji to FENC to help fund its programs.
IWN, a manufacturer of eco-friendly cleaning products including sanitisers and soaps, plans to export its natural ingredient-based products to Fiji as part of the first phase of the partnership. This phase will run over 12 to 18 months and involves collaboration with established wholesalers and retailers who have previously supported FENC.
The second phase will explore establishing a local manufacturing facility in a tax-free zone, pending approval from relevant authorities. This move aims to support Fiji’s economy and provide sustainable funding for FENC. IWN founder Hepke Van Der Luis proposed the partnership after discussions with FENC Fiji’s founder and chairperson, John Samy, who said the collaboration addresses FENC’s financial challenges and allows for expansion of its support to vulnerable communities.
FENC focuses on assisting the “poorest of the poor” school children by supplying essentials like stationery and bags.
Despite government grants and donor support, rising demand has strained resources, forcing the foundation to turn away some children.
Mr Samy emphasised the importance of the partnership as it would create a reliable funding stream, enabling FENC to significantly increase its outreach and sustain its mission for future generations.
