GOVERNMENT’S role through programs like Blue Prosperity Fiji is to support and strengthen it by providing the tools, information and resources to help communities continue the vital work.

Ministry of iTaukei Affairs permanent secretary Jone Nakamocea made this comment during the launch of the Blue Prosperity Fiji Ocean Science Report at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva last Thursday.

“As we look to the future, our success will depend on continuing to bridge traditional knowledge and scientific understanding, ensuring that both walk side by side in our approach to sustainable ocean management,” he said.

“Today’s achievement shows what’s possible when government, science, and communities unite with one purpose – to protect the ocean that protects us.

“To our i-qoliqoli owners, chiefs and communities, vinaka vakalevu for your leadership and care for our ocean. As we celebrate, let us also look ahead.”

Fiji, he said, had committed to sustainably managing 100 per cent of our ocean and fully protect at least 30 per cent of our waters.

Mr Navakamocea said this report was not solely a presentation of scientific findings.

“It reflects the vital relationship between our communities and the ocean that supports our livelihoods and culture.

“For the iTaukei people, the ocean is an integral part of our identity. It carries our stories, our traditions, and our cultural history.”
