THE launch of the Blue Prosperity Fiji Ocean Science Expedition is a testament to what Fiji has achieved through science, tradition and community work, says Minister for Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu.

During the launch of the report at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Mrs Bainivalu said the Blue Prosperity was the largest underwater research effort in Fiji’s history, surveying 270 locations across 13 provinces.

The results of this expedition, she said, gave us both hope and responsibility.

“They show that while our reefs remain resilient, they are also vulnerable, facing growing pressures from climate change, overfishing, and unsustainable practices,” she said.

“We now have the knowledge. The next step is action.

“The Government of Fiji is committed to using this data to inform our Marine Spatial Plan, a national effort to strengthen fisheries management, foster sustainable economic growth, and ensure that our ocean continues to sustain life and livelihoods for generations to come.

“This was not just a scientific mission but a collaborative journey involving government ministries, local communities, NGOs, and international scientists.”

Mrs Bainivalu said this report represented more than data, it told the story of how science and tradition could work together.

“It is a testament to what we can achieve when science, tradition, and community come together with one purpose, to protect the ocean that protects you.”

Mrs Bainivalu said acting now, and continuing to work together could help secure a future where Fiji’s reefs remained vibrant, productive, and protected, a legacy of prosperity for our children and grandchildren.
