THERE are elements trying to sabotage the sugar industry, says Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh.
The minister’s comment comes in light of a series of incidents involving alleged arson attempts.
He said the latest incident was reported last weekend at Malele in Tavua, where someone allegedly tried to set a brand new mechanical harvester on fire. Fortunately, the attack was foiled and the machine suffered only minor damage. He warned that people were attempting to sabotage the industry, especially in the cane fields where vital equipment and crops were targeted.
“Sabotage is on the rise in the sugar industry and in particular in the fields,” said Mr Singh.
He also called for military intervention.
“Military presence has to be stepped up to protect our assets and workers.”
Mr Singh claimed benzene was deliberately spilled on the harvester’s wiring, which could have caused significant damage. He also urged the police to investigate and bring the culprits to justice to safeguard the sugar sector, which remains crucial to Fiji’s economy and rural livelihoods.
The Fiji Police Force confirmed an official report was received on the alleged arson attempt.
Investigations are continuing.
