Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga has strongly rebuked recent comments by Opposition Leader, Inia Seruiratu concerning the Commission of Inquiry report, warning that public statements on the matter could undermine the judicial process.

In an official statement released last night, Mr. Turaga called on the Opposition Leader to exercise restraint and respect the independence of the courts.

“We request Hon. Seruiratu to refrain from making comments regarding the Commission of Inquiry report, as the matter is currently before the court,” said Mr. Turaga.

He emphasised that while public discourse is an essential feature of democracy, commentary on cases before the courts is not only inappropriate but risks jeopardising the integrity of judicial proceedings.

“Any public commentary is inappropriate and undermines the independence of the courts and the integrity of the ongoing judicial process,” the Minister said.

The Commission of Inquiry report is currently under a judicial review process in the courts and also part of police investigations.

“We therefore request Hon. Seruiratu to refrain from making further statements on this matter and to allow the judicial process to take its proper course without external interference.
