A La Niña watch is currently in effect, with global climate models predicting a likely development of weak La Niña conditions between October and December 2025.
This is according to the Fiji Climate Outlook October 2025 – March 2026 released by the Fiji Meteorological Service last week.
La Niña happens when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become cooler than normal. This cooling changes wind patterns, ocean currents, and rainfall.
The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that for October 2025, most parts of the Fiji Group are expected to receive normal to above normal rainfall, with further above normal rainfall likely from October to December 2025.
Looking further ahead to January to March 2026, rainfall is again likely to be normal or above normal across Fiji.
In terms of temperatures, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be above normal during October, and this trend is forecast to continue throughout the October to December period.
As Fiji moves toward borderline La Niña conditions, forecasters warn of the potential for above average rainfall, especially during the upcoming wet season, as La Niña patterns typically enhance rainfall across the country.
