Chess fever in the capital

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has partnered with the Fiji Chess Federation to host the highly anticipated Fiji National Chess Championship, which is set to kick off today at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala Campus.

Being the official National Standard Chess Championship, this five-day event will feature nine rounds of competition using the Standard Swiss System.

Players will complete two rounds each day over the first four days, leading up to the final round and prize-giving ceremony on the last day.

The tournament will see Fiji’s top chess players competing for cash prizes, trophies, and the prestigious title of National Champion.

The competition is sure to be intense and exciting for both players and spectators.

Federation president Hilda Kunau expressed her appreciation for the FWCC’s support and financial contribution, emphasising the significance of the championship.

“This is the biggest tournament of the year the National Standard Chess Championship,” said Kunau.

“It brings together the best players in Fiji for five days of intense competition, and we are deeply grateful to the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre for their financial support, which allows us to host this event at the highest standard.”

The championship is scheduled to take place in Room 019-10A & B at USP Laucala Campus, Suva, the daily rounds will commence at 8am.
