A couple from Namunamu settlement in Mataso, Ra, who died from fish poisoning, will be laid to rest today.
Peni Bainivalu and his wife Seini Josefini Sauraki, both aged 35, died on Sunday night after consuming what family members say were the eggs of a puffer fish caught from a nearby river.
Mr Bainivalu’s elder brother, Waisiki Masirewa told The Fiji Times the fish had initially been caught as food for their dog by a younger sibling.
“Unfortunately, Peni and Seini ate the puffer fish eggs, and their daughter also consumed parts of the fish,” he said.
The couple’s teenage daughter remains admitted at Lautoka Aspen Hospital as the family prepares for the burial today.
The bodies of Peni Bainivalu and Seini Josefini Sauraki were taken to their village yesterday afternoon.
