Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya has criticised the trend of raising serious aviation concerns on social media, saying Fiji’s civil aviation system must not be undermined by what he called “every Tom, Dick and Harry” airing grievances online.
Speaking in Parliament today, Mr Koya said complaints about corruption, undue influence or abuse of power within the aviation industry must be handled through proper legal channels.
“It’s become habitual in Fiji that every Tom, Dick and Harry raises their issues on social media,” Mr Koya said.
“If you have a proper legal complaint with evidence, take it to the authorities, not Facebook.”
Mr Koya was responding to allegations raised by an independent aviation operator, who claimed unjustified restrictions and possible abuse of power by regulators. He said such issues must be addressed through existing grievance procedures.
“Whether it’s a complaint of corruption or victimisation, there are institutions designed to handle it,” he added.
“Don’t turn it into gossip, this is about air safety, not popularity contests.”
He strongly defended the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF), calling it one of the country’s “foremost institutions” and reminding the House that CAAF operates under strict international standards as a signatory to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
“We can sympathise with an operator, but there is no compromise when it comes to safety,” he said.
“CAAF must be allowed to carry out its duties without being trialled in the court of public opinion.”
