ABOUT 400 families from the Nabua Muslim League settlement will be relocated to Koronivia in Nausori.

Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa told Parliament on Monday that plans for preliminary infrastructure works, including road access, drainage, and utility connections, were underway.

“The ministry is working with stakeholders like iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Lands Ministry to finalise lease arrangements and ensure legal clarity for the relocated families,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“The ministry is also formulating a first-home grant assistance package to support evicted families who qualify for Housing Authority lots. That’s something that we’ve discussed with the management and the board, as well as the executive management of the Housing Authority for tenants who’re being evicted from these informal settlements, not only from Nabua, but also other areas around Suva, to be given dedicated lots.”

Mr Nalumisa said that in the developed subdivisions, a specified number of lots had been allocated to the ministry, specifically for low to middle-income earners evicted from informal settlements.

He said several iTaukei households from the Nabua Muslim League settlement have expressed interest in returning to their villages.

“The ministry has incorporated this option into the policy and is currently consulting government development agencies to ensure corporate support mechanisms are in place for these families.

“The ministry is also collaborating with Habitat for Humanity Fiji on Greenfield, a vacant project aimed at relocating evicted families that have been served with eviction notices.”

Mr Nalumisa said the ministry was also consulting the Public Rental Board to provide space in its flats for families who could be accommodated.
