The Macuata Rugby Union (MRU) has suspended one of its U20 players for the remainder of the 2025 season following an act of misconduct during their Skipper Cup Round 7 match against Ba.
A video widely circulated on social media showed the player throwing punches during a scrum.
MRU president Saimone Calealawa said the actions went against the principles of the sport.
“A video circulating on social media shows the player throwing punches during the exchange, an action that goes against the core values of rugby, including respect, discipline, and sportsmanship. MRU takes this matter extremely seriously and acknowledges the concern it has raised within the rugby community and beyond,” he said.
Calealawa confirmed the Union acted after completing an internal review and discussions with the coaching staff and management.
“Following a thorough internal review and discussions with the U20 coaching staff and team management, the Macuata Rugby Union Board has made the decision to suspend the player for the remainder of the 2025 season.
“This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to discipline, accountability, and the integrity of our Union and the sport,” he said.
Calealawa stressed that the incident should serve as a warning.
“This incident also serves as a clear reminder to all our players: such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said.
He also issued an apology to Ba Rugby Union.
“On behalf of the Union, we extend our sincere apologies. The incident was regrettable and does not represent the values that Macuata Rugby Union seeks to uphold.”
