DESPITE the downpour over the weekend, hundreds turned up for the Wanfire concert at Burkurst Park in Suva on Saturday.
Braving the weather with raincoats, umbrellas, and, in many cases, a willingness to simply dance in the rain, concert-goers were not going to let “a little rain” stop the concert.
The all-night event featured performances from local and regional artists, closing with Australian–New Zealand singer and actor Stan Walker, who described the night as unforgettable.
“It’s been a long time coming,” he said.
“To be here in Fiji, to sing with you all in the rain, and to feel this love, I’ll never forget it.
“Music brings us together, no matter the weather, no matter where we come from. Tonight, you showed the world what Fiji is all about.”
Walker also paid tribute to the late George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso, dedicating his final numbers to the legendary musician.
“I spent some time with that man, and he was an inspiration.
“He touched so many lives across the world. So to perform here tonight (Saturday) is truly an honour.”
The concert also created opportunities for small businesses. Dozens of food vendors set up stalls, with many saying it was their first time selling at such a large event.
Organisers have not confirmed whether Wan Fire will return next year, but by all accounts, this year’s edition was a success.
