Three people, including a child, have lost their lives in separate road accidents over the past two days, as Fiji’s national road death toll climbs to 52, ten more than the same period last year.
The first fatality occurred on the night of September 26 along the Kings Road near Vitogo, Lautoka. A 47-year-old woman, travelling as a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 27-year-old man, died after the car allegedly collided with a truck during an overtaking attempt. The impact caused the vehicle to veer off the road. The woman sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.
The second accident took place on the afternoon of September 27 in Navola, Korolevu, Sigatoka. A 10-year-old girl died after the vehicle driven by her father veered off the road and hit a post. The child was among four passengers in the car. Her father and three others were admitted to Sigatoka Hospital.
In a third incident, a woman in her 30s died in an alleged hit-and-run in Suva last night. The victim was struck while crossing Stinson Parade. The driver failed to stop and police are now searching for the suspect. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the CWM Hospital.
Police investigations into all three accidents are ongoing.
