DESPITE the rainy and soggy weather, the Naitasiri rugby team showcased their determination as they successfully defended the prestigious INKK Farebrother Trophy against Vatukoula with a final score of 35-15 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Taking an early lead, Naitasiri held a 13-3 advantage at halftime, but Vatukoula put up a strong fight, refusing to be intimidated by their more experienced opponents.

The challengers tested the champions throughout the match, but Naitasiri’s composure and depth ultimately proved decisive, allowing them to pull away in the second half and retain the coveted trophy.

Captain Jone Naqiri acknowledged the tough challenge presented by Vatukoula, emphasising the importance of respecting their opponents and backing themselves in the match.

“We respected them as a team and we also backed ourselves heading into this match as it’s the second last challenge,” said Naqiri.

He also highlighted the team’s strategy of developing new players by giving them playing opportunities each weekend, with the goal of building a squad ready for future challenges.

“We have a large group with new players who get the chance to play each weekend.

“Hopefully by the time and if we do make it to the Skipper Cup Final – all players in the squad would have had a run onto the field.”

With this successful defence behind them, Naitasiri now turns their focus to the next challenge as Suva prepares to try and wrestle the Farebrother Cup from their grasp.

The upcoming match promises to be another thrilling encounter.
